Gastrointestinal dysfunction has become quite common in our society, encompassing disorders such as Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Gastroesophogeal reflux disorders (GERD), microbial imbalances, and leaky gut. Gastrointestinal health and wellness is at the core of optimal health and wellness for all other body systems and processes.
“Given the prevalence of GI health issues and the secondary effects impaired GI health has in the body, supporting healthy GI function and designing nutritional therapies for those with chronic GI dysfunction is a focus of my practice.“
A healthy gastrointestinal tract allows for good absorption of needed nutrients, while preventing large gastrointestinal products from leaking into circulation. When an unhealthy gastrointestinal tract allows this leakage, the body’s detoxification burden increases and the body’s immune system is activated. This creates a cascade of events in the body which may contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms but also may contribute to chronic symptoms and conditions in other areas of the body.
Through specific functional nutrition protocols, irritating factors can be reduced or eliminated, while promoting the body’s ability to restore intestinal integrity. By supporting gastrointestinal wellness and balance, the body’s overall health and wellness is also positively affected.
